Oil Is The New Tobacco

May. 20, 2007

If you want some hope, think of this: Remember walking into a restaurant in the 70s? Remember the thick nicotine
haze that hit you the minute you opened the door? If you were lucky, the
place had a non-smoking section, which essentially was three tables towards
the back where they didn't put an ashtray.

Now what's it like?

Plenty of smoke-free restaurants and cities. Smoke-free BARS, for Pete's
sake. To rip off Hunter S. Thompson, the worm turned, and the gasoline
blew back on the arsonists.

The anti-smoking movement should be our blueprint on how to move ourselves
into a less oil-dependent state.

We have to educate, motivate and tax ourselves into a different pattern.
Why not punish oil companies at the pumps if they will not provide
biofuels? Create a situation where our fuels can be sold cheaper, and the
car markets will get in line.

It's worked in the past. We've changed our smoking habits, our drinking
and driving habits, all as a result of the combination of public relations
and public policy.

It can happen here too.

Think Talk Trade's position on issues of climate, agriculture and energy policies.
